Taxi booking firm Uber was this month valued at USD40 billion following a USD1.2 billion financing round, making it one of the most valuable new technology start-ups. It was founded in 2009 and, during the past year alone, has expanded its global network from 60 cities in 21 countries to 250 cities in 50 countries. Uber is one of the most striking examples of the disruptive business model – entering a market with an established way of doing things and showing how it can be done differently. This approach means even the smallest start-ups can compete with corporate giants, by distinguishing themselves from their rivals and delivering genuine value to the consumer. Disruptive innovation in action Even in industries that seem inextricably linked to established business models, an innovative start-up has a chance of success if it can provide a viable alternative with unique advantages. In the case of Uber, the companys idea was to offer a new way to hail a taxi. It does not own cars or employ drivers, but provides an app that links customers to available cabs. The model offers benefits that customers would not normally get, like being able to track their car on a map to know exactly when it will arrive. Another example of carving out an industry niche by doing things differently is Zipcar, the worlds largest car sharing company. Speaking at the Hult International Business School campus in San Francisco, Zipcar co-founder Robin Chase said the firms aim is to make renting a car as easy as using your own. It has created a community of individual car owners who make their vehicles available for hire. One of the key parts of the companys strategy is utilizing excess capacity. Most of the time privately owned cars are sitting idle, and traditional vehicle rental packages are based on 24-hour bundles, even if the customer only needs the car for a short time. This tactic has also proved effective for Airbnb, which was launched four years ago and now provides access to 650,000 spare hotel rooms around the world. Compare this to InterContinental Hotels Group, which took 60 years to build up its global network of 645,000 rooms. Speaking about her own experience of launching an innovative business, Ms. Chase said she benefited from being an industry outsider. This meant she had fresh ideas and could approach challenges from an interdisciplinary background. The Zipcar founder also advocated honesty about what you know and dont know, and boosting your knowledge through research and the help of trusted advisors, combined with humility in leadership, and plenty of persistence. Milton’s Justification of God In the epic poem Paradise Lost, the author John Milton tells his story of Man’s fall from paradise and God’s punishment on mankind. Milton, in his opening statement, says that he will â€Å"justify the ways of God to men† (Milton 1.26). Milton achieves this purpose by addressing the issues of the paradox of man’s free will and God’s introduction of evil to mankind, and giving a logical explanation as to why each was rightfully intended as part of God’s plan. The argument against God states that if God is the creator of everything and that everything starts in him, and he knows everything that is and will be, then we cannot justify his ways because that implies that he created man knowing man would fall. The argument saying that God is the origin of evil because everything or iginates from him is a controversial and difficult statement. Portrayal of Women In Invisible Man women were primarily given the role of prostitutes, caregivers and sex objects that presented them as inferior to men. The author fails to reflect on the struggles of women in the novel but encourages reflecting on the struggles of black males. In Invisible Man, written by Ralph Ellison, women are intensely stereotyped by the author and could also be characterized as â€Å"invisible† based on the author’s description of the main character and his experiences in the novel. Sybil showed to have stereotypical opinions about black men and invisible man understood what type of women she was. Invisible man decided that she was perfect to take advantage of because she was lonely when the Brotherhood took a lot of time. Sybil is a very weak woman and needs certain attentions in order for her to be completely satisfied. Invisible man strived to improve himself in the novel, which Sybil failed to do. He seeks out and â€Å"chooses to use Sybil precisely because she is â€Å"lonely,† â€Å"misunderstood,† â€Å"neglected,† and â€Å"wistful† (Sylvander 78). Invisible man manipulates this woman and takes advantage of her. In this sense Sybil is stereotyped as a weak woman who doesn’t improve herself. There was also another women whose husband was a member of the Brotherhood; even though she didn’t believe in the Brotherhood. She was interested in satisfying her emotional needs and tricked invisible man in coming over by saying she had questions over the Brotherhood. Invisible man portrays white women in the novel as beautiful and sensual; black women fail to have these characterizations. Black women in the novel such as Mary are limited to being caretakers and serving without the beauty that he characterizes the white women with. Invisible man presents the way black women were viewed in society compared to white women at the time. The women who lived with Trueblood, Kate and Matty Lou, lived a harsh life and experienced no happiness. Trueblood impregnated his own daughter, which shows how horrible women were treated in this novel. Trueblood tries to explain what he had done and how he tried to move without moving; a mere excuse for his actions. Mary played a significant role in the novel because she was the main character who helped invisible man find his identity. Unfortunately, in order to truly find himself the narrator had to leave Mary. Mary immediately came to his rescue after he was released from the hospital. She was a mother figure in invisible man’s eyes who agreed to nurture him until he could support himself. This is proof that women in the novel were given minor roles . Invisible man uses Mary until he leaves her for the Brotherhood. But it was Mary’s lectures of leadership and helping the society that drove invisible man to the Brotherhood. Mary was â€Å"something out of my past which kept me from whirling off into some unknown which I dared not to face† (Stanford 29). The women in this novel basically helped the speaker find himself in society. The black and white women in the novel gave to the speaker and helped him throughout the novel. They are not unimportant in the novel but do not play any major roles as human beings. The narrator’s opinion regarding women always focuses on their physical appearances, which supports how he thinks they are no more than how they look or make him feel. The women never make their own decisions and only act out to help the narrator in his actions. Ellison’s invisible man does minimize the female experience by not having a main female character. Henry uses his ability of persuasion to sway the Virginia House of Burgesses. Edwards uses persuasion to give a sermon directed toward sinners and natural men. Henry and Edwards have many parallels and variations in their works. One can distinguish the similarities and differences between Patrick Henry and Jonathan Edwards in the purpose, repetition, and rhetoric of their writings. Jonathan Edwards and Patrick Henry have similar, yet different purposes. Both Henry and Edwards are trying to convince or motivate a group of people to act upon what is righteous and just. Henry, indifferent to Edwards, is pleading with the Virginia House of Burgesses to fight against the ruthless and overpowering British for independence: It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry peace, peacebut there is peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death! (Henry 90) Henrys intention is to influence Congress to lead the way to war and he is trying to motivate the Congressmen to feel the same way as he does about fighting for freedom. The audience, after listening to Henrys speech, is compelled to feel an obligation to fight for their country until independence is gained or until their blood has been spilled. Although Edwards is motivation speaker like Henry, his purpose is to inform sinners that the Devil is waiting for them and that it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds [them] up (Edwards 38-40). Edwards purpose is to assure people that everyone is condemned to an eternity in hell and only by confessing their sins and acknowledging Christ as the only savior with grant them salvation. The audience is terrified from Edwards statements and through their fear of damnation people are obliged to change their sinful ways. Although Henry and Edwards have slightly similar purposes in persuading a group of people, they deviate into thei r own separate purposes as well. Both Patrick Henry and Jonathan Edwards fulfill their purposes by using repetition to further put across their ideals. Henry, in his unique way, uses repetition to justify the means for war: We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne. (Henry 90) Henrys rationale is that the colonists have done everything possible to prevent war, all of which have failed, and now it is time to fight. The audience feels easily swayed by Henrys ideology, feeling a sense of honor and patriotism mounting inside them. Edwards, diverting from Henrys views, uses repetition to warn sinners of an angry God and Gods wrath (Edwards 38). Edwards purpose in doing this is to create an impression of fear so that sinners will reform themselves to be pure. The reaction of the audience is one of fright and despair as the people fear for their souls and salvation. Although both Henry and Edwards use repetition to further communicate their point, Henry uses it to motivate people, whereas Edwards uses it to scare sinners. In addition to repetition, Henry and Edwards both use rhetorical questions to further convey their philosophies. Henry uses rhetoric to put across his principles about the Revolutionary War: They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a
